Missouri All-Time Kinney Foot Locker High School Cross Country Nationals Finalists

Missouri All-Time Kinney Foot Locker High School Cross Country Nationals Finalists

© Missouri Track Fanatic

The Championships were known as the Kinney Cross Country Championships from 1979 – 1992 and the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships from 1993 – present.

The Foot Locker website says that from 1979 – 1980 five qualifiers from five regions =25 made it to Nationals. The website’s results seem to suggest something different. The 1979 results only list the top ten while the 1980 results show 32 finishers in each race. From 1981 – 2003 there were 38 National qualifiers, normally 8 from each of four regions. But in 1981 it appears there were 9 Midwest girls and only 7 Northeast girls. Also in 1981 there were 9 South region boys while there was one unknown non-finisher. In 1982 there were just 6 Northeast boys while there were 10 boys from the South. Things seemed to even out in 1983, with 8 qualifiers from each region. In 2004 the field was expanded to 40 National qualifiers, 10 from each region. For a long time now there have been four regions: Northeast, South, Midwest, and West.

Six Missourians set for 2011 NCAA DI Cross Country Nationals

Six Missourians are set for 2011 NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships
at Terre Haute Indiana's LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.

Redshirt junior Eric Fernandez makes his third appearance for the Arkansas Razorbacks. Although this is the first time in many years the Hogs didn't qualify as a team. The 15th ranked Hogs finished 3rd at regionals but didn't receive an at-large berth. Fernandez was runner-up at the South Central Regional and will look to earn his first All-American honor. Freshman Jessica Jackson will look to help the Lady Razorbacks seek a top 10 finish. The Ladybacks are ranked 14th going into the meet and Jackson won the conference rookie of the week honor atleast three times this season.

Tulsa's Sam Masters steps in for teammate Danny Thater for Tulsa Monday. The Hickman grad sat out regionals  but is scheduled to run the 10k championship race today in place of Thater who ran at regionals. Tulsa is ranked 21st. Northern Arizona freshman Caleb Hoover will look to help the 13th ranked Lumberjacks to a top 10 finish. Hoover joins a small list of Missouri men to run at the DI National Meet as a freshman.

UMKC's Cosmas Ayabei will experience his first national meet and be in search of a top 40 finish for All-American honors. The Kenyan native earned an automatic bid last week with his 7th place finish at regionals.

Florida State freshman Collen Quigley is looking to help the Seminoles to their first National Title. After runner-up finishes the last two years, the Noles have reloaded and are ranked #1 but should face a fierce battle with two-time defending champ Villanova, Georgetown, Washington, and Oregon.

Sadly Emily Sisson won't be making an appearance in Terre Haute. The Providence sophomore who transferred from Wisconsin is on a loaded Friars team that was ranked in the top 5 most of the season. Injuries and illness cost Providence a chance at a national title though. Sisson was kept out of Regionals while recovering from illness and the Friars didn't cruise to a qualifying spot like expected. Another of their top runners who also was an All-American last year had a tough race before getting word this week she's got a stress fracture.

It's always an exciting day at Nationals, a lot of action and a lot on the line in just an hour and a half.

Congrats to Parkway South XC/Distance Coach Adam McDowell! The 32 year old became the latest of the group of Missourians to qualify for the Marathon Trials that take place in Houston January 14.

Rock Bridge rolls at Border Wars XC Championship

The spectacular season for the Rock Bridge Boys and Girls continued Friday in St. Charles’ McNair Park at the 2011 Border Wars XC Championship. The Bruins came away with easy wins, cruising to 17 and 30 point totals on Friday afternoon. There were no divisions or classifications, just one girl’s race and one boy’s race with medals going to the top 50 finishers in each.

Mitchell to run 150 meter race for USA in England Saturday

Maurice Mitchell, who made his World Championships debut two weeks ago, will wear the USA jersey for the third time Saturday in England. Mitchell, the Florida State senior, Raytown South grad, and Kansas City native will compete in the Great North City Games in Newcastle Gateshead England. The event pits Great Britain and Northern Ireland against the US in a limited schedule event that will run 2.5 hours. The event will run 1-3:30pm England time which is 6 hours ahead of us. If you want to watch online you can do so here:  http://www.greatrun.org/tv/ 7:00 -9:30a.m. Missouri time. Mitchell ran the second leg of the US 4x100 relay in the preliminaries before being replaced for the final-which the US failed to finish again. Mitchell will join Walter Dix in the straight 150 meter race. Dix just ran the second fastest 200 time ever for an American today in 19.53.
Mitchell made his first US team in the summer of 2010 at the NACAC championships.

Cantwell, US Men come up short in Shot Put

An impressive United States streak came to an end Friday in Daegu South Korea at the 2011 Outdoor World Track & Field Championships. Not only did the American Men’s Shot Put victory streak end at three, but all four Americans finished out of the medals in the 16 lb. ball toss. Cantwell (2009 champion), Reese Hoffa (2007 Champion), and Adam Nelson (2005 Champion) as well as young stud Ryan Whiting failed to throw much over 70 feet resulting in only three bids to the 2013 Championships for the Americans. The World Champion receives a bye into the next championships, allowing their country to send up to four athletes in an event if all have earned the qualifying mark.

Cantwell, the Eldon Missouri  native and Eldon High School and Mizzou graduate finished in fourth with a best toss of 21.36 meters/70-1 or so. Hoffa finished fifth, Whiting 7th and Nelson 8th.

Jenny Barringer-Simpson: World Champion!!!

Jenny Barringer Simpson, who I now claim as a Missourian after having married former Liberty High School and Truman State runner Jason Simpson last year, became the second American woman to claim the Outdoor World Championship Gold Medal in the 1500 meters since the inaugural bi-annual event in 1983 when Mary Decker-Slaney earned Gold. Barringer-Simpson, who now lives in Colorado Springs, CO, claimed the title Thursday in Daegu South Korea, in 4:05.40.

Tegenkamp does run the 10k! at the World Championships Sunday

Former Missouri High School State Champion/Record Holder and Lee’s Summit native Matt Tegenkamp will run just his third career 10k on the track Sunday in Daegu South Korea at the World Championships. The race is scheduled for 7:30pm which is 5:30am in Missouri. I have to apologize this post is late and won’t provide acceptable notice before the race.

As a sophomore Tegenkamp helped Dave Denny’s Lee’s Summit High School team to the 1997 MSHSAA Class 4 Boys Cross Country State Title. In 1999 Tegenkamp claimed the Class 4 Boys XC individual championship in course record time and went on to earn Cross Country All-American honors with his fifth place finish at Footlocker Nationals. At the 2000 State Track Meet Tegenkamp earned two more State Titles and a State Meet Record with his time in the 3200 meters. Tegenkamp blazed the Dwight T Reed Stadium Track in Jefferson City that Friday Night as rain delayed the meet several hours. His 8:57 3200 performance that night gave him the State Meet Record. He followed that up with a 4:11 1600 meters win on Saturday.

As a freshman at The University of Wisconsin, Tegenkamp ran to a fifth place finish at the World Junior Cross Country Championships. He and US teammate Dathan Ritzenhein’s 3rd place made for one of the best US duo finishes at the World XC Championships.

Rodgers withdraws from Worlds, Mitchell replaces him on 4x1 team pool squad

Michael Rodgers breakout on the Outdoor World stage will have to wait while another Missourian will take his place and get his first chance to wear the Red, White, and Blue with the world watching. Rodgers, who in June jumped to a tie for ninth on the world all-time 100 meter performance list with his 9.85 second time at the Prefontaine Classic, accepted a provisional suspension from the US Anti-Doping Agency and withdrew from the World Championships after testing positive for a banned stimulant: methylhexaneamine, which is found in energy drinks.

Rodgers, the St. Louis native, Berkeley High School grad, NAIA national champion at Lindenwood and Oklahoma Baptist Universities, and 2009 USA 100 meter champion was to compete in the 100 meters and 4 x 100 meter relay at the World Championships in Daegu South Korea that began yesterday. Rodgers, who earned a spot on the US team after his third place finish at this years national meet, said on twitter that he unknowingly consumed the stimulant when he drank an energy drink in Italy in July while training and competing with the US team in preparation for the World Championships.

4 Missourians part of Team USA for Thorpe Cup: Lefever, Adock, McMillan, Lettow

Four Missourians are apart of Team USA in the annual Thorpe Cup this weekend in Chula Vista California at the USA Track & Field National Training Center. The Thorpe Cup is a combined events competition between the USA and Germany featuring a women's heptathlon and men's decathlon with seven athletes per country per gender. The event is named after Jim Thorpe I believe, the former multi-sport athlete who excelled at just about everything he seemingly tried in the early 20th century. The competition will also include a few Americans competing in a few selected events in preparation for the World Championships later this month.

Rodgers, Mitchell named to Initial Team USA World Champs 4x100 Relay Pool

Missourians Mike Rodgers and Maurice Mitchell are among the ten athletes named to the initial Team USA 4x100 relay pool for the 2011 World Championships.

Rodgers finished third in the 100 at the USATF Championships last month in Eugene to earn a spot on Team USA in the 100 and a spot in the 4x100 relay pool. Mitchell finished fourth in the 200 at the USATF Championships and was selected to the initial relay pool by the World Championships coaching staff. Rodgers and Mitchell will train and compete with the relay pool in Italy on July 19th. The list of ten athletes will be cut down to six and on August 6th, USATF will submit their final roster for the World Championships. That six will come from the top four finishers from nationals as well as two others not on the team in other events. So Maurice Mitchell will be vying for one of those two spots. It's not clear whether Mitchell will be on  the roster as a 200 alternate whether he makes the 4x100 pool of six or not.

2011 High School Nike Track Nationals

The Lee's Summit West High School (Track Club) Lady Titans make their second straight appearance at the second annual Nike Team Track Nationals in Eugene at Oregon's Hayward Field. The Meet is held tonight after the USATF Nationals meet concludes. The top 12 boys and girls teams from across the country selected and provided transportation for 9 athletes and two coaches. There were 8 regional winners based on the scores of the contested events and 4 at-large berths. Only 10 events are contested and a team gets to compete in the 9 of their choice. Points are scored based on the international scoring table, not finish place. The larger margin of victory the more points gained on the competition. The Lady Titans won the Midwest Region and scored the 4th most points in the country.

Matt Tegenkamp makes USA World Championships Team in 10k

In just his second career 10k on the track, and second of the season, Matt Tegenkamp held off all but one of a large pack over the last mile to take second place at the USA Championships and earn another berth to the World Championships. Tegenkamp took second to Galen Rupp as the began pair to pull away a bit from the field over the last 600 meters or so. Rupp claimed the national title in 28:38.17, with Teg following in 28:39.97, and Scotty Bauhs taking third in 28:40.51. Bauhs is former NCAA DIIer at Chico State and another former DIIer got a mention on the webcast call. Larry Rawson, the long time track analyst, when talking about Matt after the race mentioned a fellow Lee's Summit Missourian and former Central Missouri(CMSU) standout Mark Curp.

Maurice Mitchell!! 2 x National Champion! 4x1 and 200 in 19.99!!!

Taking the baton on the third leg of the 4x100 meter relay finals Maurice Mitchell Florida State/Raytown South put some distance on the field and Brandon Byram anchored the Seminoles home to win the 4x1 title in 38.77. Less than 40 minutes later Mitchell returned to the track for the 200 final. From lane six he scorched the track and the field in 19.99 to win his first individual title with an illegal wind of 2.3. It was still a stadium record I believe breaking Michael Johnson's mark. He beat the field by almost 4/10ths of a second. The runner-up was Marek Nitt of Arkansas in 20.38. Maurice's teammate Brandon Byram added 5 points with fourth place finish in 20.41, 1/100th of a second from 3rd place. Hopefully that one team point won't make a difference in the team battle.

With the 4x400 to go the Florida State Men lead Florida by 4 points. FSU has no 4x400 and Florida is running out of lane 1. Their lead off leg is Christian Taylor who just won the triple jump in 58-4.75!!!!
We'll see how much that took out of him.
