4 Missourians part of Team USA for Thorpe Cup: Lefever, Adock, McMillan, Lettow

Four Missourians are apart of Team USA in the annual Thorpe Cup this weekend in Chula Vista California at the USA Track & Field National Training Center. The Thorpe Cup is a combined events competition between the USA and Germany featuring a women's heptathlon and men's decathlon with seven athletes per country per gender. The event is named after Jim Thorpe I believe, the former multi-sport athlete who excelled at just about everything he seemingly tried in the early 20th century. The competition will also include a few Americans competing in a few selected events in preparation for the World Championships later this month.

Mizzou multi-event and pole vault coach Dan Lefever is making his debut as apart of Team USA as the men's team head coach. He is joined on the men's squad by his pupil Nick Adcock. Adcock is in his first post-collegiate season after an All-American multi-events career at Mizzou. Adocck was a hurdle star at Kansas City's Oak Park High School, and will be wearing the USA jersey for about the fifth or sixth time. This will be his third or fourth Thorpe Cup Team. Adcock was 8th at the USA Champs and won the USATF Indoor Heptathlon Championship last winter.

Chantae McMillan and Lindsay Lettow will be making their first USA Team as a part of the women's squad. McMillan, a Rolla native, just finished a 5 year career at the University of Nebraska were she earned All-American honors in the long jump and multi-events. McMillan tied for 2nd at the DI Indoor Nationals pentathlon, and was the top seed heading into the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships in June. Unfortunately she failed to clear the bar in the high jump and didn't finish the competition but was able to put that behind her two weeks later and earn a personal record and a bronze medal at the USA Championships. Her pr score of 6003 points was short of the World Championships A standard of 6150 points, so while she won't be making the trip to Worlds she is making her first USA team.

Lettow, just finished her junior year at the University of Central Missouri were she earned two more NCAA Division II national titles. The Iowa native claimed the DII Indoor National Pentathlon title scoring a meet record 4064 points, and helped the Jennies to a sixth place finish, just 3.5 points  from a team trophy. Outdoors Lettow scored over 5600 points early in the season in the heptathlon for the top DII mark of the season. She qualified and competed in 5 events at the DII Outdoor Championships: heptathlon, long jump, high jump, and the 100 and 400 hurdles. She came away with the heptathlon national title helping the Jennies to a tie for sixth place. Lettow finished 9th at June's USA Championships in the Heptathlon.

World’s best tune up at Thorpe Cup

8/11/2011

CHULA VISTA, CALIF. - Before they leave for the IAAF World Championships, the U.S.’s top decathletes and heptathletes will participate in a final tune up at the Thorpe Cup hosted by the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center on Saturday and Sunday, August 13-14.

The entire world championships squad of multi-event athletes will be on hand participating in select events. The men’s lineup includes defending world champion Trey Hardee, 2011 world leader Ashton Eaton, 2008 Olympic gold medalist Bryan Clay and 2011 USA runner-up Ryan Harlan. The women’s roster includes 2011 U.S. champion Sharon Day and 2008 Olympic silver medalist Hyleas Fountain.

The Thorpe Cup is an international multi-event competition between the U.S. and Germany. The teams are made up of seven men and seven women. The top five men’s decathlon and the top three women’s heptathlon scores are added to determine the overall men’s and women’s team winners. With the timing of the Thorpe Cup immediately preceding the World Championships, it has become a tradition for the world squad to participate as a final tune up.

Heading into this year’s World Championships, the multi-event roster for Team USA is arguably the strongest ever, with the men aiming for a U.S. podium sweep. Multi-event competition begins on Saturday, August 27 in Daegu, South Korea.

For the Thorpe Cup, the U.S. women’s team includes Ryann Krais, Chantae McMillan, Bettie Wade, Abbie Norton (Stechschulte), Barbara Nwaba and Lindsay Lettow, coached by Lori Shepard and Kim Dismuke. The men’s team includes Miller Moss, Chris Randolph, Mark Jellison, Nick Adcock, Matthew Johnson, Matthew Clark and Joe Detmer, coached by Dan Lefever and Matt Chisam.

1996 Olympic gold medalist and American record holder Dan O’Brien will be on site as a commentator, and other multi-event Olympic alumni are scheduled to attend as well.

There will be a free live webcast of the Thorpe Cup at www.usatf.org provided in partnership withRunnerSpace.com.

Lefever to Coach US Thorpe Cup Team
Tiger combined events coach will lead US against Germany

Aug. 3, 2011

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Mizzou associate track and field head coach Dan Lefever has been selected as the head coach of the men's USA Track and Field Thorpe Cup Team, which pits the nation's top combined event athletes in a head-to-head competition against Germany. The competition will be held in Chula Vista, Calif., from August 13-14.

"I am very honored to have been selected to coach the team," Lefever said. "Being able to represent the USA in anything is very special and I am very grateful for the opportunity. The Thorpe cup is a special event and I am thrilled to be involved with it. I believe it will be fun to coach with Matt Chisam and work with some great athletes as we take on a very good German team."

The Thorpe Cup is an international track and field competition between the USA and Germany. Teams are made up of up to seven men and seven women who compete in decathlon and heptathlon. Athletes received a predetermined number of points based upon their performances in each of the events in the decathlon and heptathlon. The top five men's and top three women's scores are added together to determine the overall men's and women's team winners.

Lefever, who has coached his fair share of successful decathletes at Mizzou, will share the coaching responsibilities of this year's team with Matt Chisam, the combined events coach at Harvard. A familiar face will join Lefever as a member of the US Thorpe Cup team as former Tiger All-American Nick Adcock will compete with the US. Also competing for the United States will be Miller Moss, Chris Randolph, Mark Jellison, Matthew Johnson, Matthew Clark and Joe Detmer.
