Ten Missourians set for 2012 USA Olympic Marathon Trials
Ten Missouri runners, who previously or currently live in Missouri, will toe the line Saturday morning in Houston to run for a chance to make their Olympic Dreams a reality and qualify for Team USA for the marathon at the London Olympics next summer.
Six spots are up grabs Saturday morning in Houston for the 2012 USA Olympic Team as the Men’s and Women’s Marathon Team will be decided at the Olympic Marathon Trials. The men’s race gets under way at
8 am CST while the women will follow at 8:15 am CST. The top three finishes in each race will earn spots for the London Olympics in eight months.
There is no live television or internet broadcast sadly but a delayed television broadcast will air from 2-4 pm CST on NBC.

11 total runners with Missouri connections qualified for the event but 10 are entered in the field of almost 400. Matt Tegenkamp, who ran the first two track 10k's of his career last season, had a time fast enough to earn a berth in the trials but has never raced a competitive long distance road race. He'll try to earn his second straight Olympic Team berth in either or both the 5k and 10k at the track and field team trials in Eugene, Oregon in early summer.
While none of the 10 runners with Missouri connections can be called favorites or is expected to finish in the top three and earn an Olympic Team berth, a few have a chance of surprising the field and anything is possible over 26.2 miles. Several should be in contention with good races.
On the men’s side, Jason Lehmkuhle, a St. Charles native and Duchesne High School and Drake University grad is one of the top 10 men in the country and has had some great races in the last four years including a 5th place finish at the 2008 Marathon Trials.He missed making the 2008 Olympic team by 1:15. He has seven qualifying marks since the qualifying period began four years ago. He has a marathon best of 2:12.34 and half marathon best of 1:02.49 in that period. Lehmkuhle was a NCAA DI All-American and qualified for NCAA Nationals in 5k and 10k.
Ryan Bak is the former NCAA DIII All-American at Trinity College in Connecticut who ran a 2:14 in early December to qualify. Bak's time ranks him 17th. Bak lived in St. Louis for several years until moving to Bend Oregon to train last fall. Bak spent a year as an assistant coach at St. Louis University and works with Yurbuds sports headphones. Like Bak, Matt Hooley earned NCAA DIII All-American honors. Hooley found his stride at Carleton College in Minnesota after graduating from Hickman High School in Columbia. Two Missouri High School State Champions round out the group of five men to race Saturday. Adam MacDowell captured the 1996 Class 4 Boys State Cross Country Championship and now coaches the boys at his alma mater Parkway South High School. After running for the Patriots and Coach Jim Schmuck, MacDowell had a standout career at the University of Missour under Jeff Pigg. He earned All-Big 12 honors and helped the Tigers qualify for the NCAA DI Cross Country National Championships. MacDowell ran 2:18.47 at The Chicago Marathon in October to just dip under the 2:19 qualifying mark. His time ranks him 74th.Tommy Neal was the Missouri Class 1 State Cross Country Champion in 2000. Neal was an All-Conference performer during his college career which began at Southwest Missouri State (Missouri State University) and was completed at Central Missouri State University (U of Central Missouri). Neal lives in Colorado and is a part of the Boulder Running Company Adidas Team.
Serena Ramsey-Burla, leads the group of five Missouri women. Burla is the Waukesha Wisconsin native who ran for her father at Waukesha West High School. Her grandparents lived in St Louis and after a good but not elite high school career Burla ended up at Mizzou where she helped the women to their 5th NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country title in 9 years in 2004. Burla also guided Mizzou to two straight NCAA DI Cross Country Nationals appearances including a 12th place finish in 2003 and an 11th place finish in 2004. In 2004 as a senior, Burla placed 65th at the NCAA Cross Country Meet despite an early fall. Burla completed her collegiate career as a fifth year senior by earning All-American honors on the track by placing 6th in the 2006 NCAA DI Outdoor Nationals 10k. Her time of 33:52 set a new school record. Serena’s sister Emily joined her on the Mizzou team after beginner her college career at Northern Illinois. Emily Ramsey has followed her sister’s footsteps and found success on the roads. Ramsey earned a bronze medal at the 2011 Go St. Louis Half Marathon in 1:22.
Burla is married to Adam Burla the former Marquette High School and Mizzou thrower. Adam captured the Class 4 Shot Put State title while competing for the Mustangs. Serena Burla qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials in the 10k where she placed 16th in 33:40. Burla is just two years removed from radical cancer surgery that removed a tumor and part of her hamstring. Despite the loss of muscle tissue, Burla has excelled on the roads. Burla finished 3rd and 4th at the last two USA Half Marathon Championships and in 2010 earned the silver at the 2010 USA Marathon Championships at the NYC Marathon in her Marathon Debut in 2:37. Burla improved to 2:35 last May in Czechoslovakia. She has a best of 1:10 for the Half Marathon and ran a 32:48 track 10k in October. Her marathon times ranks her 20th on the performance list. After several years in the St. Louis area the Burla’s moved to Virginia in the fall.
Burla isn’t the only former female Tiger or Mizzou alumnus set to race Saturday. Three others join her. After a high school career at St. Joseph Central High School where she was the Class 4 Cross Country State Champion, Ann Marie Brooks-Chappell turned down scholarship offers and enrolled at The University of Missouri. After a year of experiencing college as a student and time away from competitive running Brooks joined the Mizzou team and excelled with Coach Pigg and Coach Rick McGuire. She eventually became one of the top 1500/3000/5000m runners in the country and in 2001 anchored the Mizzou women to the Distance Medley Relay National Title at the Indoor National Championships and the world leading time for Coach Rebecca Wilmes. That national title was won and coached by a group of Missouri natives: Kerry Hils Moberly HS, Ashley Wysong Nevada HS, Sunny Gilbert Marquette HS, Ann Marie Brooks St. Joseph Central, Rebecca Wilmes Parkway West HS.
Brooks was a four-time All-American and placed fifth in the 1500 at NCAA’s as a junior and named Academic All-American five times. She got her 5k times down to the mid-15:00’s and had a professional career for several years with Nike and other sponsors. She made the US World Cross Country Team at least once.
Julie Lossos ran at Lafayette High School in Wildwood before attending The University of Missouri. Lossos didn’t compete on the Mizzou team but has found plenty of success on the roads in the St. Louis area in recent years. She not only races on the Big River Running Company team but works in the business and operations department. Lossos coached previously at MICDS High School where she helped the likes of Grace Bridwell to All-State honors. Jackie Pirtle was one of the top girls in the state when she ran at Francis Howell North in St. Charles. She earned multiple all-state honors and if my memory is correct was in or near the lead of the Class 4 Girls State XC meet before a fall and struggle to the finish. Pirtle began her college career at Mizzou before finishing at Lindenwood University where she helped Coach Cary Eldredge’s Lady Lions to a conference title and berth in the NAIA Cross Country National Championships. After a near miss earlier in 2011 Jackie Pirtle-Hall earned a qualifying mark with her 2:44.34 in California in early December.
It doesn’t appear Angie Turner attended or competed at The University of Missouri but she doesn’t live far in Hallsville, and apparently now works there. According to a Columbia Tribune Story by David Briggs last year, Turner was a 1600m State Champion at Salem High school in 1986. After a year on an athletic scholarship at Tarkio College, which shut down in the 1990’s, Turner got away from running and eventually got to the point of smoking 1 ½ packs of cigarettes a day. But five years ago Turner got back into an active lifestyle and had found success as an endurance athlete. Turner won the 2011 Go St. Louis Marathon in 2:59 in April and qualified for the trials with a 2:45.01 in Ohio in October. Turner, 42 or 43, won’t be the oldest of the 188 women to start the race Saturday, Somers Smith is 50 and has qualified for seven trials, but Turner isn’t slowing down and this may just the first of several trials for her.

Three of the eleven Missouri qualifiers have multiple qualifying times. Jason Lehmkuhle leads the way with seven qualifying marks while Serena Burla has six and Ann Marie Chappell has two. All three are former NCAA DI collegiate All-Americans.
