Columbia residents Nick Adcock and Liz Roehrig compete this weekend in Bloomington Indiana at the 2012 USA Indoor Combined Events Championships at Indiana University’s Gladstien Fieldhouse. There is not an Indoor multi-event World Championship, so only top-three finish medals are on the line.

“Hardee’s top competitors are his fellow 2011 World Championships teammate Harlan and the defending USA Combined Event Champion Nick Adcock. Harlan has the second best marks of the field with an indoor heptathlon score of 6,102 points and a decathlon best of 8.171 points. Harlan won this event in the early days of his professional career with wins in 2005 and 2006. In his first year as a post-collegiate, Adcock won the 2011 edition of this event with 5,711 points.”

Adcock, the Kansas City area native, Oak Park High School All-Stater, and Mizzou All-American will be looking to add to his collection of USA Medals Saturday and Sunday in the Heptathlon. Among Adcock’s USA medals are two golds: the 2007 USATF Nationals Junior Decathlon title and the 2011 USA Indoor Combined Events Heptathlon title. Adcock has represented Team USA on numerous occasions, but all will pale in comparison if he is to make the 2012 London Olympic Games team, surprising America’s big three of Bryan Clay, Trey Hardee, and Ashton Eaton.
Trey Hardee is the only of the big three American’s entered into this weekends competition. Adcock’s Indoor Heptathlon personal-record of 5939 points is fourth highest among entrants, behind Trey Hardee-6208, Ryan Harlan-6102, and Miller Moss-5986.
Adock captured the 2011 title with 5711 points, besting Patrick Woods by 11 in come behind fashion in the final event, the 1000 meters. After an 8th place finish at the 2011 USA Outdoor National Decathlon, Adcock finished 5th in the Thorpe Cup last summer. The Thorpe Cup, is an annual multi-event team competition between the US and Germany.
Roehrig, a Chilton Wisconsin native and NCAA runner-up at The University of Minnesota, will try for her first USA medal Sunday in the Women’s Pentathlon. Roehrig placed 5th at last year’s championships scoring 4118 points and was 7th in in 2010 scoring 3893 points. Besides two NCAA Outdoor Heptathlon runner-up finishes and several more All-American finishes, Roehrig’s best performance was probably in 2009 at the Thorpe Cup in Germany. Roehrig won the competition with a personal record of 5990 points in the heptathlon, held in Germany. Roehrig has never medaled at the USA Championships but has represented Team USA several times in the Thorpe Cup.
Roehrig has a pr of 4386 in the indoor pentathlon set in 2009, and is second best among the entrants. Sharon Day and Bettie Wade should be the favorites for the competition.
Adcock and Roehrig will look to add to the history book of medalists with Missouri connections. Here are the Results from athletes with Missouri connections with medalists in bold.

Michelle Moran is the former Lafayette High School standout who was a Missouri Class 4 high jump state champion. Moran even had a top 35 place finish in the Class 4 State Cross Country Meet while at Lafayette. She then went onto a great career at the University of Misouri as an All-Big 12 and NCAA qualifier multi-eventer. Moran was 2nd at the 2004 USATF Indoor Pentathlon while former Mizzou teammate Fiona Asigbee was just behind her in 3rd. The pair then both placed in the top 8 at the 2004 Olympic Trials.
Fiona Asigbee was born in the UK but grew up in the US and went to high school in Iowa before a stellar career at The University of Missouri, where she was an All-Big 12 performer and NCAA qualifier. In 20004 Asigbee earned a bronze medal at the USA Indoor Combined Events Championship Pentathlon. In 2005 she improved to a silver medal at the Indoor Pentathlon. Asigbee didn’t compete in the 2006 meet but earned her first Outdoor US medal, a bronze in the USA Outdoor Nationals Heptathlon. In 2007 Asigbee won the Indoor Pentathlon, claiming her first national championship. She finished 4th at the Outdoor Championships Heptathlon in 2007.
Tracy Partain is a Springfield, Missouri native who was an All-State hurdler at Parkview High School. Partain excelled in the multis at SMS/Missouri State where she was conference champion and Missouri Valley Conference Meet MVP. In 2006 Partain finished as NCAA runner-up at the Outdoor Nationals Heptathlon scoring 5827 points. Roehrig was 8th in that meet and Sarah Gretzmacher was 16th. Sarah Gretzmacher was a standout at Seckman High School in Imperial, Missouri. Gretzmacher went on to an All-SEC career at The University of Georgia where she was an NCAA Nationals Qualifier. She finished 16th at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor meet and 18th at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor meet. In her only USA Indoor Combined Events Pentathlon, Gretzmacher placed 9th in 2008.

Kip Janvrin is the Iowa native and NCAA DIII national champion at Simpson College in Iowa. Janvrin is the University of Central Missouri co-head coach and multi-event supercoach. Janvrin was a 2000 US Olympian in the decathlon and the 2001 USA Outdoor Nationals Decathlon champion. He’s mentored many excellent multi-event athletes, I assume that inlcudes the others on this list, except for Adcock. Jeff Sander is a former NCAA DII National Champion for Janvrin at Central Missouri. Sander is the most decorated of Central Missouri’s track & field athletes, having earned 10 All-American honors. Not sure where he’s from. Travis Geophert is an Iowa native like Janvrin. He competed at Northern Iowa then went to Warrensburg where he trained with Janvrin and was an assistant coach at Central Missouri. Geophert guided Andy Gilmore (Southern Boone HS-Ashland) to a the to DII mark in the high jump and a runner-up finish at the 2003 outdoor national meet. Geophert returned to Northern Iowa as an assistant and eventually became head coach for a year before moving on to Arkansas where he is the Razaorback men’s multis and field events coach. I assume Elliott Young was training with Janvrin, his 2003 results list his affiliation as unattached-Warrensburg, Missouri.
Aaron Moser is a North County High School graduate who went to The University of Miami-Florida to play football and do the multi-events. After success on special teams on the football field and the multis in track in college, Moser moved to Warrensburg for awhile where he trained with Janvrin. Moser now works with MF Athletics, one of the top track & field equipment manufactuerers and sales companies in the US. Moser is based out of St. Louis but on the road a lot for work.
