The Everett Family has gotten good at hugging because they’ve done a lot of it lately. Daniel and David Everett finished off excellent high school careers at Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis last year. The twins and youngest of four children of Paul and Traci Everett, had senior seasons that put them in the the Missouri record books.
As a sophomore in 2009, Daniel ran 4:14 in winning the Missouri Class 3 1600 title, becoming just one of a handful of sophomores to ever break the 4:20 barrier as a sophomore. Daniel and David had good junior seasons but things couldn’t have gone much better for the pair as seniors. The pair led Westminster to their first Cross Country state trophy with a third place finish at the 2010 State Meet in the Class 3 race. Daniel took the title in 15:52, while David was third in 16:05.
Daniel went on to place 15th at the Nike Cross Country Midwest Regional and then 23rd at the Footlocker Cross Country Midwest Regional to earn All-Region honors at both. Even better things were in store for the 2011 track season.
Daniel captured the 1600 at the Kansas Relays in 4:12 to earn the chance to qualify for the Jim Ryun Dream Mile at the Adidas Grand Prix in New York City. At the 2011 State Track Meet the pair dropped jaws with their 1-2 finish in the Class 3 1600 on day 1. Daniel won the title in 9:08.43 to put him 6th on the Missouri State Meet performance list. David followed close behind in 4:12.85.
Daniel qualified for the 800 final to close out day 1. On Day 2, David and Daniel bookended the Westminster squad that captured the 4x800 title in 7:55.05 to earn the 6th best state meet mark in Class 3 history. Daniel followed that title looking to go 3 for 3 with a victory in the 800. Oak Grove’s Tyler Banks had other ideas though and edged Everett down the finish stretch to win 1:54.62 to 1:54.82.
After a short rest, Daniel toed the line alongside brother David in the 3200. The pair could keep pace with Festus junior Drew White who won in 9:16 while David and Daniel placed 2nd and 3rd in 9:23. Westminster’s four qualifiers racked up 50 points to place third in the Class 3 team race, earning the school’s first team trophy ever. The Everetts had a hand in each of those points.
A few days later the pair lined up for the all-star high school mile race at the 2011 Big River Running Company Festival of Miles. The pair both set new personal bests, going 1-2 in the full mile race. Daniel clocked a 4:07.68 while David was just behind in 4:10.31.
Ten days later Daniel lined up at Icahn Stadium in New York City for the Jim Ryun Dream Mile at the Adidas Grand Prix. Everett placed 10th in 4:08.14, running on just one of three IAAF Grand Prix certified facilities in the U.S.
Daniel capped an amazing season and career with a 4:06.91 mile to place 3rd at the 2011 New Balance Outdoor Nationals in North Carolina.
There was no slowing down for Everett as he moved on to New York for a college career at Columbia University. Everett had several excellent cross country races in the fall and almost made his way on to the seven man team that qualified for the NCAA Division I Cross Country National championships and was ranked as high as 18th.
In track, Everett had an excellent indoor season with some great times and all-conference honors, but with has blazed on the track in the outdoor season. Everett ran a 3:43 1500 two weeks ago to finish just behind Alan Webb in 5th. Everett’s time is just a second off of a 4:00 mile equivalent.
Today Everett will join teammate and fellow class 3 standout Adam Behnke at Lutheran South and two others to run the Penn Relays 4 x Mile Relay Championship of America. The pair will shoot for the win and possibly the American Collegiate Record.
The race will be run at 12:25 CST and can be seen online: http://www.thepennrelays.com/ before the television coverage is on NBC from 1-3pm CST.
