The spectacular season for the Rock Bridge Boys and Girls continued Friday in St. Charles’ McNair Park at the 2011 Border Wars XC Championship. The Bruins came away with easy wins, cruising to 17 and 30 point totals on Friday afternoon. There were no divisions or classifications, just one girl’s race and one boy’s race with medals going to the top 50 finishers in each.

The Lady Bruins got things started with a 1-2 finish by the freshman/senior standout duo of Kayla Funkenbusch and Sam Garrett. Funkenbusch scored the only sub 20 minute performance-19:55 on the girl’s side on the many turns and occasional rough footing of McNair Park. Garret was 10 seconds back. Not far behind Funkenbusch and Garrett were Rock Bridge’s Megan Schulte in 4th and Mackenzie Schimpf in 7th. Emily Wright added a 16th place and Annie Murphy was 27th to put 6 in the top 30 for the Bruins who had 1-5 split of 1:29. Rock Bridge totaled 8 medalists on the girl’s side with 8 finishing in the top 39.
Coach Neal Blackburn, in his 11th year at Rock Bridge after coaching at Osceola, has done a great job of building the program and it shows in the numbers and depth of talent. 40 boys and 35 girls were entered in the meet for the Bruins.
After the Lady Bruins domination it was the boy’s turn. After apparently staying with their teammates through the mile the Bruins top 3 pulled away from the field quickly with large leads at 1.5 miles. Caleb Wilfong led the way with Nathan Keown and Jordan Cook trailing. The white jersey’s with green RB on the chests just kept coming, and by the finishline the only question was how few points the Bruins would total. Wilfong took the title in 16:21 while fellow senior Cook surpased junior Keown and finished in 16:31 with Keown 5 seconds back in 16:36. McCluer North standout Nicolas Stewart was the only one to keep Rock Bridge from a perfect 15. He was 4th in 16:53 while Rock Bridge’s so Evan Schulte and junior Nick Dale weren’t far behind in 5th-16:56 and 6th-17:08. Sophomore Zach Cook was 8th in 17:17 and Colin Sees rounded out the top 7 in 11th in 17:29. The Bruins earned 12 of the top 50 medals on the boy’s side.
While a meet title is a big deal for most teams, these Bruins have much bigger goals. The only meets the squads haven’t won this season I believe for both teams was two weeks ago at the huge Palatine Invitational in Chicago. They didn’t come home with titles but both had impressive finishes. The girls came away with a 9th place finish scoring 229 points in the 28 team race. The boys though were amazing. They finished 2nd to host Palatine and beat Legendary program York. Palatine totaled 110 with the Bruins at 126 and York at 136 in the 28 team race. That race, along with their talent and previous State Meet finishes of 3rd in 2009 and 2nd last year has earned the boys some national attention and a spot in the national rankings.
I believe the ladies will be looking for their first ever state trophy this year but they, along with boys have higher hopes. They’re shooting for state titles and have a good mix of talented runners thoughout the grade levels who are ready to deliver. The boys join the list of great Missouri Boys teams of the last 20 years to earn a spot in the national rankings but want to do what thos programs have done, win a state title. After talking with the boys and coaches they’re primed and focused on goal.
