Tegenkamp, Sialo & Volkert earn All-American Honors at 2011 DII XC Nationals

2011 NCAA DII Cross Country National Championships Missouri Review

Tegenkamp, Sialo and Volkert earn All-American Honors at DII National Championships

Three of the four Missourians competing at the NCAA Division II Cross Country National Championships Saturday earned All-American Honors with their top 40 finishes.

Marlee Tegenkamp, the Missouri Southern junior from Lee’s Summit joined her brother Matt in the Tegenkamp All-American Club with her 30th place finish. She battled the cold and snow in Spokane Washington to cover the 6k course in 22:08. Neely Speence, a Shippensburg senior who’s coached by her father Steve- a 1992 US Olympic Marathoner and 1991 World Champs Marathon bronze medalists, captured another national title crusing to 14 second victory in 20:53. Saturday’s performance improves upon Tegenkamp’s 46th place finish last year and her 68th place finish in 2009 when she was the fifth runner helping the Missouri Southern Lady Lions to a third place team trophy.

5th ranked Augustana (South Dakota) surprised the field taking the women’s title with a 4 point win over #1 Western State (CO) 75-79. The MIAA member Pittsburg State Lady Gorillas finished 15th Saturday scoring 422 points. They were led by Erica Testa’s 79th place finish and Melissa Peden’s 83rd place finish.

A little more than an hour after Tegenkamp added her name to the Lee’s Summit Grad College All-American Club, Pittsburg State’s Adam Volkert did the same. The junior covered the 10k course in 31:59 to take 36th. Volkert’s run in the snow improved upon his 101st place finish in 2009 when he was the 3rd finisher for Pitt State’s 18th place team, and his 56th place finish in 2010.

Central Missouri University’s super duo of Laban Sialo and Dalton Moberly were both looking for All-American finishes in Spokane. Sialo, the junior from Kenya, earned his second cross country honor with a 16th place finish. That tops his 22nd place finish from 2009 and a 46th place finish in 2010. Sialo was with the lead group early on and at the half way point was in 12th, just 7 seconds behind the leader. He was just 10 seconds back of a top 10 finish. Kearney graduate Dalton Moberly came up a little short in his attempt to join the Moberly-Curp Family All-American Club. Moberly covered the white snow covered rolling hills of the Northwest in 32:41.

Team wise Western State won their first title since 2005 and ended Adams State run of three straight titles. Western had six All-Americans finishing  1, 2, 5, 7,  13, 30, scoring 27 points to dominate the meet. Adams State was runner-up with 69 points while Grand Valley State was third with 100 and Chico State fourth with 110 points. Sadly the Division II meet is expanding too late for Central Missouri. They were ranked 13th  after regionals but with the current selection process for Divison II being what it is the Mules full team was left home. Currently the top two teams from each of the eight regions receive automatic berths while additional berths go to the regions that had finishers in the top eight at the national meet the previous year. I believe the regions will be adjusted in the next year or two and recently expansion of the number of qualifying teams and individuals was approved. With just 24 qualifying teams, the Division II meet is much smaller than the DI, DIII, and NAIA meets. Sialo and Moberly will seek to help the Mules to more DII track and field trophies in 2012.
