Werner and Long will cap phenomenal seasons at Foot Locker Nationals

Werner and Long cap season with Foot Locker Nationals

Girls Race 11:15 a.m. CST Boys Race 12:00 p.m. CST

In their short careers, Eureka High School sophomore Hannah Long and Ste. Genevieve High School freshman Taylor Werner are already included in the conversation about the all-time best in Missouri High School distance running with their performances. Saturday the duo will join elite company by being just the 24th and 25th Missourians to race at the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships. The pair will make the 33rd and 34th appearances by Missourians at the meet, which began as the Kinney Cross Country Championships in 1979.

Long and Werner will toe-the-line at San Diego’s Balboa Park Saturday at the meet’s 34th edition. The duo from the Eastern side of the state are just the 3rd and 4th underclassmen from Missouri to qualify for the meet, which currently brings together the top 10 finishers from each of four regional meets. The meet is dubbed as the first high school national championship competition of any sport, and one of the few that can actually be determined in competition and not subjectively by voters or polls.

Werner’s Dream Season continues with first of two national meets,
Nike Cross Nationals Saturday

While anyone could have predicted that Ste. Genevieve freshman Taylor Werner would was going to have a great first high school cross country season after her performances as an 8th grader, it’s hard to imagine anyone thought it was going to be this good. How good has it been? Amazing!

Topfer, Storms, and Richardson hope for individual Nationals bids

  Springfield, Missouri

For the second time in four years, Missouri State University hosted the NCAA Division I Cross Country Midwest Regional Friday in Springfield. With the Division I National Championship Meet moved from the Monday before Thanksgiving to the Saturday before, that meant regionals moved up a day to Friday. The race was held on the MSU Cross Country Course on the Springfield Underground site, developed by former MSU coach and current Northern Illinois Coach Greg Hipp in 2007.

Athletes from Division I schools across nine states competed, with 35 women’s teams and 30 men’s teams represented. At stake were qualifying spots to the National Championship Meet as well as trophies to the top two teams and All-Region honors to the top 25 finishers. The top two finishing teams from each of the nine regionals earned automatic spots to Nationals while another 13 at-large berths are to be announced sometime today. The top four individual finishers not from a qualifying team earn automatic spots at nationals while a handful of at-large individual spots will be handed out today also.

MO High School Sectional 1 XC Meet: Déjà vu of District 2 Meet

If you happened to be on the Parkway Central High/Middle School campus in Chesterfield the last two Saturday mornings, October 20 and October 27, for the Class 4 District 2 and Sectional 1 cross country meets, you may have been doubting your senses Saturday. It would have reasonable for one to think he or she was having a case of De Javu. That’s because things played out quit similarly both days, some would say eerily, just days before Halloween.

2012 STL Suburban West Conference XC Championships

2012 (St. Louis) Suburban West Conference Cross Country Championships

Long and Kauppila cruise, Marquette Girls edge Lafayette and Eureka, Lafayette Boys win

After getting pushed back two days because of weather, the (St. Louis) Suburban West Conference Cross Country Championships was held October 8, in Chesterfield as Lafayette High School hosted the meet at the cross country course at Parkway Central High. It was the first of three meets in the coming weeks for many of the runners on the course. The site will play host to the Class 4 District 2 meet and the Class 4 Sectional #1 on October 20, and October 27.

In the Varsity Boys race, the Marquette duo of Noah Kauppila and Adam Roderique earned their third straight 1-2 finish. After Rodgerique kicked passed Kauppila for a 1-2 Mustang finish at the Rim Rock XC Classic September 22, Kauppila captured the Parkway West title September 29 with Rodgerique not far behind. Monday, the junior Kauppila, earned his second straight conference title rolling to victory just under 16 minutes, clocking in at 15:59. Senior Rodgerique, improved eight spots from last year’s meet finishing in 16:12. Parkway South senior Brian Hernan continued a strong season with his bronze medal finish in 16:21.

Werner leads Ste. Gen. to victory over St. Teresa’s; Lafayette Boys take crown at Enke Invitational

2012 Paul Enke Hazelwood Central Cross Country Invitational

The 38th Annual Paul Enke Hazelwood Central Cross Country Invitational almost never happened. In fact, cross county races ever being held again on the famous “Man-Maker” course with its notorious hills at Sioux Passage Park were in doubt in the last year. Tough economic times led the St. Louis County administration to propose budgets cuts for the St. Louis County Parks Department. Included in those proposals were closing or selling facilities and Sioux Passage was included in those. A public outcry helped push the county to find ways to save some properties and services, including Sioux Passage.

With Sioux Passage saved, the races went on Saturday. Defending Varsity Team Champions St. Teresa’s was back, making the trip from Kansas City as they have in recent years, as was Fort Zumwalt West on the Boys side, though having lost two of their top four from last year’s race to graduation. Hickman senior Nicole Mello would open her season trying to defend her crown after missing all of the fun at the Forest Park XC Invitational while taking the ACT last weekend. Mello undoubtedly knew what she’d be facing, or at least who one of her top competitors would be, surely hearing from her coaches and teammates who saw Ste. Genevieve’s freshman phenom Taylor Werner blaze to victory at Forest Park.

2012 Pole Vault Explosion under St. Louis' Gateway Arch

The 2012 edition of Pole Vault Explosion is being held in the shadow of the Gateway Arch. The annual 4th of July pole vault competition, in about year number six, is underway in downtown St. Louis, on the river front of the Mighty Mississippi, on the grounds of the Gateway Expansion Memorial Park. The event, directed by former Lindenwood University standout Mark Aschen, was held on the river front of the Missouri River in St. Charles for the several years, in conjunction with the city's 4th of July celebration. Last year the event moved to Kirkwood, during the Kirkwood's annual July 4th events. The event will run in conjunction with the annual Fair St. Louis 4th of July celebration in downtown St. Louis.

The event is an all-ages competition that wraps up with an elite competiton, that over the years has drawn some of the the U.S. and world's best vaulters, including Missouri Olympians Jeff Hartwig and Kellie Suttle.

Today's events got under way at 7:30 a.m. with approximately 95 athletes entered. There are two women's groups, three men's groups, and an elite section. Some of the best high school and college athletes around Missouri and the region are set to compete.

This year's elite vault is set to begin around 6:00 though the event will use an rolling schedule. The event includes seven athletes who recently competed at the 2012 USA Olympic Track and Field Trials. April Bennett and Mark Hollis are scheduled to compete, both finished 5th at the Trials, just missing spots on the Olympic Team.

On final attempt, Borman wins Javelin title and qualifies for Olympics

De Soto native, and multi-event track and field Missouri High School State Champion for Festus High School, Brittany Borman has put herself in the elite group of US women who throw the javelin in recent years. The University of Oklahoma senior captured the last two NCAA Division I Outdoor National Titles. At the 2012 meet last month, Borman dominated the event. Her five legal throws were better than every other throw by her 23 competitors but one.

Despite her outstanding resume and the fact she just signed a professional sponsorship contract with Nike, Borman needed to perform even better if she wanted to reach every track and field athletes dream and compete in the Olympic Games. Borman needed to place in the top three at the USA Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Or. this weekend and also throw more than six feet farther then she ever had to reach the Olympic Qualifying Standard of 200-9. Borman cruised through the qualifying round Friday with a 4th place finish and best toss of three measuring 178-9.

A day after failing to record a legal throw in the discus, junior Brittany Borman got redemption, winning the 2011 NCAA Division I Javelin title.

In the Javelin finals on Sunday afternoon, sitting in 3rd place with a best toss of 188-11 and having just one more throw, Borman came through in a big way. Borman’s sixth and final toss sailed 201-9 at historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon. Olympian. Borman’s throw flew her into 1st place and the two final athletes with remaining throws didn’t eclipse her mark, giving her the gold medal.

With one 20 meter run-up and a heave of the spear, Borman bettered her personal best of 194-11 by nearly seven feet, captured the U.S. national championship, gave her an Olympic qualifying mark, broke the U.S. Olympic Trials Meet Record, and earned her a berth on the USA London Olympic team.

A phenomenal athlete, Borman was simply too great in the Javelin and Discus to venture into the combined events in college and be simply excellent, after so much success in the sprints, jumps, hurdles and throws and heptathlon in high school.

Without that last throw, Borman would have had to settle for a bronze medal and some competiton  on the European Summer Track Circuit and forced her to wait another year before she’d have a chance to compete again for the opportunity to represent the USA in international competition. Now, Borman can forever say she’s an Olympian, and in just over a month, she’ll compete against the world’s best, and have an opportunity to earn another medal, one that would look the best of all on a resume.

Borman won her second straight NCAA DI Javelin title last month in dominating fashion. Borman had to enjoy the awards presentation alone as she had no time for the scheduled one after this years Javelin victory and had to go straight to the Discus.

 DeShasier takes 5th in Javelin

Carrolton, Il, native and former SIU-E softball  player who picked up the Javelin as a senior after her softball career, Alicia Deshasier, placed 5th in the Javelin. Deshasier, who trains with former SIUE head track and field David Astrauskas who now coaches at the University of Wisconsin, had a best mark of 185-9. Deshasier, placed 3rd at last year’s USA Championships and won the 2011 Pan-Am games javelin last fall representing the USA Team.

No slowing down Daniel Everett

The Everett Family has gotten good at hugging because they’ve done a lot of it lately. Daniel and David Everett finished off excellent high school careers at Westminster Christian Academy in St. Louis last year. The twins and youngest of four children of Paul and Traci Everett, had senior seasons that put them in the the Missouri record books.

As a sophomore in 2009, Daniel ran 4:14 in winning the Missouri Class 3 1600 title, becoming just one of a handful of sophomores to ever break the 4:20 barrier as a sophomore. Daniel and David had good junior seasons but things couldn’t have gone much better for the pair as seniors. The pair led Westminster to their first Cross Country state trophy with a third place finish at the 2010 State Meet in the Class 3 race. Daniel took the title in 15:52, while David was third in 16:05.

Daniel went on to place 15th at the Nike Cross Country Midwest Regional and then 23rd at the Footlocker Cross Country Midwest Regional to earn All-Region honors at both. Even better things were in store for the 2011 track season.

Drew White joins elite company, runs 9:04 3200 at Arcadia Invitational

Festus High School senior distance running star Drew White put himself in some elite company Saturday, April 7, 2012. White ran a 9:04.08 3200 meters at the Arcadia Invitational track meet in Arcadia, California. The Arcadia Invitational is one of the biggest and best regular season high school meets in the country, attracting some of the best athletes from all over the country. With a knowledgeable announcer guiding a supportive crowd, White and 25 other high school boys broke 9:10 in the 3200 Invitational race. White placed 23rd in the 30-man field, which was won by Nike Cross National champion and Foot Locker Cross Country National runner-up Futsum Zienasellassie in 8:47.

The son of Ed White and Laura (Byrne) White, both of whom ran collegiately at Southeast Missouri State University, White has already had a standout career. His resume includes a 2010 Missouri Class 3 Cross Country runner-up finish with a sub 16:00 clocking, a 2011 Missouri Class 3 3200 State Track title running 9:16. Last fall he added another state title, winning the 2011 Class 3 Cross Country state title. White earned All-Region honors at the Nike Cross Country Midwest Regional last November and has signed to run at the University of Missouri next fall. White has established himself as one of the top runners in the state and may be on his way one to of the best all-time in Missouri history.

White had planned on making the trip west in search of a fast race, but after a disappointing 1600 race at the Festus Tiger Town Invitational Tuesday, April 3, White wasn’t so sure. After debating making the trip with his coach Bryant Wright and father, the trio decided to make the trip out west.

44 Missouri - MIAA athletes qualify for 2012 NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Nationals

Missouri/MIAA qualifiers for 2012 NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field National Championships
Friday and Saturday March 9-10, 2012
Minnesota State-Mankato,
Mankato, Minnesota

Fourty-Four men and women from Missouri or competing at Missouri or MIAA schools have qualified for the 2012 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championships at Minnesota State Mankato Friday and Saturday, March 9-10.

The Central Missouri Mules will need great performances to keep their indoor trophy streak alive. After posting what still stands as the top DII heptathlon score of the season, Brent Vogel's season ended prematurely. The 2011 DII decathlon champion will be in the stands cheering his teammates on, hoping for another top-4 team trophy. The Mules fell from 7th to 10th in the latest USTFCCCA rankings. But with top seeds Laban Sialo in the 5,000 and Darius Walker in the pentathlon, and six athletes, they can't be counted out. Dalton Moberly joins Sialo in the 5k and Shawn Boss joins Walker in the heptathlon. Sialo is also scheduled to run in the mile. The Lincoln University men also have long odds to add another trophy to their stuff trophy case. The Blue Tigers are ranked 12th and have six entries with five qualifiers in the sprints and hurdles. Missouri Southern is ranked 24th and have four entries with three men. Southern freshman Jeff Fraley will look to make some noise in both the 60 and 200 meters. Pittsburg State is ranked 25th and has two qualifiers, including Joplin native Colbie Snyder. Snyder's 16-10 mark in the pole vault makes him the #3 seed.
Emporia State was 22nd in the rankings before dropping out in the latest release. Emporia State has three qualifiers.

On the women's side, Lincoln is ranked 4th. The Blue Tigers have 13 entries with 10 women. They're entered in the 60, 60 hurdles, 200, 400, 4x400, mile, high jump, and long jump. The Lincoln women are the #1 seed in the 4x400. With a very tight schedule Emporia State's Katie Mona decided to run just the 800 and not the mile. Mona is the #2 seed in the 800 and placed 5th last year. Her withdrawal from the mile gave Lincoln's Twishana Williams the chance to make the trip to nationals with her 4:56 time in the mile. Emporia State is ranked #25.

The Central Missouri women were oh-so-close to a team trophy last year. The Jennies are ranked 6th and have five women qualified and 12 entries. It will be a busy weekend for the Jennies especially Lindsay Lettow and Erin Alewine. Four of the women have qualified in multiple events, and three of those are entered in the pentathlon. Lettow and Alewine, who combined to score 81 points at the conference meet will compete in seven events. Lettow is the top seed in the pentathlon, and also entered in the 60 hurdles, long jump, and high jump. Alewine is the #4 seed in the pentathlon and also entered in the long jump and high jump. Zoe Sharplin is seeded 9th in the pentathlon and 15th in the 60 hurdles. Former national high jump champion Jenna Schmidt is entered in the high jump and triple jump. Kayla Muyskens is seeded #4 in the shot put.

Truman State's All-American Jennifer Zweifel will shoot for a national title in the triple jump as the #2 seed. Zweifel is one of five MIAAers entered in the long jump. Zweifel and the Bulldogs are ranked #20. Missouri Southern is sending three athletes in the field events and are ranked #24. Nicole Green is the #6 seed in the shot put. Just like on the men's side, Pittsburg State is sending three women.

Equipment and Patience

If the last year wasn’t proof enough, then the last five months has been. It’s time to upgrade the computer. My productivity and reliability need some improvement to begin with, but with a computer that can’t handle the workload, I qucikly fall behind. Right now I’m extremely far behind. I love Adobe Photoshops’ Lightroom software that does a phenomenal  job of managing an enormous photo and video collection but my hardware can’t keeep up.

So I ask for your patience and ask you to please keep coming back.
